Kennel for animal shelter PAWS

For a long time PAWS Spain was on our list. Two of our own dogs, Max and Viento, come from this animal shelter in Mojácar (department Almería). Both dogs have recovered thanks to the good care of volunteers, after they were found in miserable conditions. For all those other Spanish Maxes and Viento's we donated money in May 2008, with which PAWS can complete a kennel.

Vets fees

During her holiday in Corfu in October 2007 Petra visited the Dutch Louisa van Vuurde. Louisa has been living several years on this beautiful Greek island and helps the local animal welfare association The Ark. The vets and tourists call on her when they have found a stray dog. Forunately stichting AAI is able to rehome most of these dogs. Louisa will use the donation from Wereldpootjes to pay vets fees. Read also Petra's story about the pup she found and took to Louisa.

Scalibor collars for animal shelter in Kavos

The American Marjory Pandi runs an animal shelter in the village of Kavos on Corfu. It occupies an area of about 1 hectare (2.5 acres) and houses on average 50 dogs. Marjoty works with the German organisation Tierhilfe Korfu. Sandflies, that cause the illness Leishmaniasis in dogs, are a big problem in Greece. Wereldpootjes has therefore paid for the purchase of Scalibor collars that protect against sandflies.

Stable for Corfu Donkey Rescue

Petra also visited the Corfu Donkey Rescue, where old abandoned and/or sick donkeys are cared for. Ah we all have a soft spot for donkeys! Sadly CDR can no longer stay at it's current location. The neighbours complained about the noise and smell. Judy Quinn, the Engglish woman behind CDR is now looking for a new place to home the donkeys, with room for 10 stables, a haybarn, clinic and quarrantine area. CDR received from us the money to build one stable.

Drontal

Worm medicines are welcome in every shelter. For this reason we have spent a large sum on Drontal and divided it amongst the shelters in Göcek, Istanbul and Guardo. This Spanish shelter received no foreign help until recently, and the manageress was delighted when two Dutch people brought her a lot of necessary goods, including the Drontal in September 2007.

Fencing for the Dierenthuis foundation

Although in principle we support only foreign charities, we ae happy to make an exception for the Dierenthuis foundation. This organisation provides a home for old and sick dogs and cats in a domestic situation. To enclose the new home in Aarle Rixtel, Noord Brabant the Dierenthuis is looking for people to buy a meter or more fencing. We have made a contribution for 10 meters of fencing.

Electricity for the shelter Ubeda

Through the Association Resanito, we discovered an animal shelter, Ubeda in Spain. A huge wish of this shelter was to obtain electricity and Wereldpootjes decided to pay for the cost of installation. Unfortunately, we have not been able to continue with this as yet due to a dispute between the community and the electricity company. Resanito has therefore put aside the money until the problem has been resolved.

Tent for a Romanian castration project

A large scale castration project in the Romanian province of Bihor has been organised by the Foundation for the Protection of Community Dogs in Campina (FPCC). Bihor has a population of 600,000 people and about 50,000 dogs, which roam freely. Not only strays, but also pets that wander off looking for love. This is the reason the FPCC gives a lot of attention to education projects in schools, promoting responsible animal ownership.

The organisation has clinics in Oradea, Marghita and Alesd. There are also two mobile teams who travel through the area castrating dogs. The dogs can recover from their operation in crates which are in a tent. Thanks to a gift from Wereldpootjes the FPCC was able to buy one of these tents. The aim is to sterilise some 12,000 dogs in 2007 (mostly the bitches), 10,000 dogs in 2008 and 8000 in 2009. The dogs will also be inoculated against rabies and sick dogs will receive medical care. The FPCC does all this for free, and relies on donations. More information.

Meat mincer for Egypt

In 2006 Wereldpootjes made a donation to the SPARE animal shelter in Cairo. The shelter has been able to purchase a meat mincer with this money. The shelter can now mince their own cooked meat, giving the them a 50% saving in costs.
